BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE / TROUBLE IN TAHITI
Speculative Design Project
Composers: Bela Bartok / Leonard Bernstein
Director: Deborah Cohen
Special Thanks: Simon Wells and Francis O’Connor
Set Design: Alfie Packham
This speculative design project explores sustainable practices in designing for opera through the creation of sets for a double bill of Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti. The project reimagines material resources from two existing productions—Simon Wells’ design for Sister Act and Francis O’Connor’s design for Tosca—to investigate the extent to which upcycling can serve both practical and creative ends.
